Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was an accomplished poet and freethinker and an inspired educator but more than anything he was and remains a testament to the idea of continuance. He passed away at the young age of 22 himself but his students, known as ‘Derozians’ or ‘Young Bengal’ – would carry on his freethinking way beyond his death to infuse the Indian public sphere with a new lease of life and ideas and play a key role in the period that came just before what some historians refer to as the Indian or Bengal Renaissance.
