The word ‘history’ comes from the word ‘historia’, which means ‘knowledge acquired after investigation’. One of the Indian words for this, ‘itihaas’, derives from what the grammarian Panini classified as “iti ha”, translating in English to “thus indeed”.
Thus indeed, it would seem, we are in the middle of many storms today. But we have weathered storms before. The knowledge of history takes us out from within a storm, on to a vantage point from where we can perceive clearly all that we need to survive it.
History tells us who we are, where we are, and gives us the tools to get to where we need to be. It complicates our understanding of everything we know and need to know and, in doing so, sets us free. It is therefore particularly tragic that our knowledge and understanding of history today is plagued by bigotry and deliberate falsehood, and confined by a lack of access to credible sources.
Indian History Collective intends to set this right. We will focus our attention on making widely available primary sources, work by professional historians and scholars and writers who bring a fresh insight to historical understanding. It is our hope that through this curation readers will discover a more meaningful relationship with this country, this world and in the process, themselves.
